The Scottish Heavy, or 70 Shilling, is an easy-drinking, malt-focussed pub classic. Maris Otter and Aromatic provide a tasty toast-and-jam barley base with Chocolate malt adding a reddish hue; wheat and oats fill out the body. Simple Things use English Archer hops to deliver a light hop freshness with notes of floral, orange citrus and a pinch of coriander adds complexity and depth, amplifying the juicy fruit flavours. There’s just enough bitterness for balance and a lingering fruity finish.

Sure we all love a juicy pale; but whether it be a well made lager, Best Bitter or indeed Mild, the thinking drinker’s drink these days goes back to beer basics and showcases the subtle nuances of malt in perfect balance and harmony with a judicious helping of hops.
“The traditional Scottish styles encapsulate these qualities perfectly but haven’t yet hit the spotlight in quite the same way as some their English and European counterparts. We at STF are on a mission to change this! So when Alchemy Brewing got in touch we jumped at the chance to collaborate on one of the most under-appreciated styles around – the humble 70 Shilling aka Scottish Heavy.
“Building on our experience from previous ‘Shilling’ brews including Scottish Light and Scottish Export we used a low and slow lager-style fermentation to keep things crisp and clean and we added a pinch of coriander to increase complexity. This beer doesn’t lack body and has a satisfyingly full mouthfeel and that complexity is a bit part of that.
Of course we don’t forget the hops completely, far from it in fact. English Archer whole cone in the boil provides a delicious floral orange citrus aroma that compliments the malt beautifully and brings just enough bitterness to encourage sip after sip.”
