Darker, stronger, more seductive; for this year’s Belgian Christmas Ale Simple Things have dialled things up a bit. The 2024 vintage of their annual release is a festive fruit bowl in a dark chocolate wrapper; banana-led Belgian-style fermentation character jumps out of the glass, followed by delicate notes of toffee, coffee, chocolate and a warming boozy glow.
The body is firm, but fair – there’s plenty to support the big flavours but it slips down easily, like one of those strangely moreish liqueur chocolates that only appear for four weeks every year. Rich and opulent, an easy indulgence. And a killer mince pie pairing.

Only traditional brewing ingredients are used, with the combination of malts and fermentation profile giving rise to a seductive, warming beer that’s refreshing and quaffable. The finish is dry, long and lingering; the perfect partner to a mince pie or hunk of stilton.
Simple Things Fermentations say “A chestnut-brown, festive fruity flavour bomb. Inspired by the likes of De Dolle’s Stille Nacht and Fuller’s Vintage Ale we aim to brew this every year, tweaking the recipe slightly each time. For this release we’ve included Simpsons Double Roast Crystal malt which imparts delicious notes of dark fruit and slightly acidic cherry to round out the fruity esters from the Belgian-style fermentation. It’s rich and characterful but clean and easy drinking; a great pairing with mince pies, cheese and every other tasty festive treat!”
