This collaboration with Matt Tarpey is a decadent synthesis of Barrel Aged Imperial Stout and Barleywine, aged for up to 26 months in select oak. The influence of Madagascar, Uganda, and Comoros vanilla beans is profound, layering aromatic sweetness over a foundation of rich chocolate and dark caramel. Drawing from the structural expectations of an American Strong Ale, the spirit of MJK and OWK barrels emerges through notes of toasted coconut and charred oak. The result is an opulent experience where the intense vanilla character bridges the gap between the roasty depths of the stout and the vinous, dark-fruit complexity of the barleywine.
Appearance. Deep, opaque brown with mahogany highlights at the edges. A low, creamy, light tan head shows minimal retention, leaving a viscous coating on the glass with visible legs.
Aroma. High intensity with intoxicating layers of floral and marshmallow-like vanilla from the Madagascar and Uganda beans. Bold maltiness featuring rich dark chocolate, toffee, and burnt sugar. The oak provides a spicy, resinous counterpoint to the sweetness, while low citrusy hop notes are present but secondary to complex barrel-derived esters and dark fruit.
Taste. The initial impression is a luxurious wave of sweet cream and vanilla, followed by deep layers of bittersweet chocolate and dark cherry. Malt complexity is high, displaying toasted bread and molasses. Firm bitterness balances the residual sweetness, though the finish remains bittersweet and lingering with notes of charred oak, bourbon-soaked raisins, and a soft, earthy spice.
Mouthfeel. Full, viscous, and coating body with low carbonation that enhances a velvety texture. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the high strength without being solventy. Noticeable creaminess from heavy vanilla conditioning.
