Sound Cycle Vol. 1 is a monumental Imperial Stout, defined by its 26-month maturation in Willett and 1792 bourbon barrels. This non-adjunct collaboration between Side Project and Private Press celebrates the raw complexity of charred oak and dark grain. Intense aromas of bittersweet chocolate and espresso merge with the spicy rye influence of the Willett barrels and the rich, toffee-laden caramel of the 1792 barrels. The palate is profoundly viscous and chewy, offering deep layers of black cherry, molasses, and toasted vanilla. Lingering bourbon warmth and a refined tannic structure from the extended wood contact create a sophisticated, velvet-smooth finish.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a thick, deep tan head that shows low to moderate retention, leaving dense oily legs on the glass as the 15% ABV and high viscosity become apparent.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and charred grain. The bourbon barrels contribute prominent notes of vanilla, spicy rye, and toasted oak. Secondary notes of dried figs, prunes, and a slight vinous oxidation are present.
Taste. Rich and intense initial impression of dark fudge and blackstrap molasses. The mid-palate is dominated by the barrel influence, showcasing spicy oak, caramel, and bourbon-soaked dark fruit. Bitterness is moderate but firm enough to balance the massive malt backbone. The finish is long and warming with lingering notes of cocoa and toasted wood.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, thick, and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low, accentuating the beer's weight. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout, without being sharp or solventy.
