Imperial Stout 15 º
This monumental Imperial Stout presents an opulent sensory experience, defined by its fifteen-month maturation in fifteen-year-old Willett Family Estate Bourbon barrels. The aroma is saturated with decadent fudge and earthy Ugandan vanilla, complemented by the charred oak and spicy spirit character of the bourbon. On the palate, a massive, viscous texture carries layers of milk chocolate and rich cocoa, balanced by a deep roasted malt backbone. The high alcohol is masterfully integrated, providing a smooth, creeping warmth that enhances complex notes of dark fruit and toasted marshmallow. It is a harmonious, intensely flavorful masterpiece of barrel-aging and sensory depth.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a thin, dark mocha-colored head that dissipates quickly into a persistent oily collar. High viscosity is evident by thick, slow-moving legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity and deeply complex. Dominant scents of rich milk chocolate and fudgy brownie are layered with intense, earthy vanilla beans. The bourbon barrels contribute notes of toasted oak, caramel, and a touch of coconut. Subdued dark fruit esters like raisins and prunes emerge as it warms, alongside a hint of roasted coffee.
Taste. The initial impression is one of immense sweetness and luxury, reminiscent of liquid fudge and chocolate ganache. Mid-palate, the Ugandan vanilla adds a creamy, floral depth that melds with the bourbon's caramel and spicy wood character. A firm but smooth roasted malt bitterness provides necessary structure, preventing a cloying finish. The aftertaste lingers with notes of dark chocolate, oak tannins, and a gentle, spirituous warmth.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, remarkably thick, and chewy with a velvety, syrupy texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the beer's weight and lusciousness. A significant, yet smooth alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the high strength without being harsh or solventy.
