English Barleywine 20 º
M.J.K. is a monumental English Barleywine that redefines the style through an extraordinary triple-barrel aging process. This still, uncarbonated liquid pours with the viscosity of motor oil, delivering a decadent sensory journey of massive proportions. The extended rest in Willett Family Estate and Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels imbues the beer with deep layers of charred oak, spicy rye, and rich vanilla. A complex English malt base yields flavors of dark treacle, sticky toffee, and macerated raisins. At a staggering 20% ABV, the alcohol is remarkably well-integrated, providing a luxurious, warming glow without harshness, concluding in a lingering, vinous finish of leather and dark chocolate.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark chestnut brown (SRM 20+) with brilliant clarity and ruby highlights. Due to the high alcohol content and still bottling, there is no head or lacing, though significant oily legs are visible on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a deeply layered malt profile of toffee, molasses, and dried figs. The barrel character is dominant, offering prominent notes of charred oak, vanilla, and bourbon-soaked wood. Moderate esters of raisins and plums combine with a complex, vinous oxidation reminiscent of aged port. Low earthy hop aroma.
Taste. Massively rich and malt-forward with initial impressions of burnt sugar, dark treacle, and thick caramel. The barrel influence is profound, providing flavors of toasted coconut, spicy rye, and vanilla bean. Fruitiness is high, manifesting as macerated dates and dark cherries. Bitterness is low to moderate, serving only to balance the significant residual sweetness. The finish is long, sweet, and complex with lingering notes of leather and tobacco.
Mouthfeel. Extremely full-bodied and viscous with a chewy, syrupy texture. Carbonation is absent (still). A strong, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, lacking any harsh or fusel burn. Velvety and luscious on the palate.
