This massive Imperial Stout, a collaboration between Side Project and Half Acre, presents a masterclass in unadulterated malt complexity. Two years of maturation in Buffalo Trace barrels infuses the jet-black liquid with deep notes of charred oak, spicy bourbon, and rich vanilla, despite the deliberate absence of adjuncts. The all-malt grist delivers an intense sensory profile of bittersweet dark chocolate, espresso, and caramelized sugars, complemented by dark fruit esters of fig and raisin. It is exceptionally viscous and chewy, offering a velvety texture that carries its significant alcohol volume with a sophisticated, lingering warmth and a harmonious, roasty finish.
Appearance.SRM 40+; jet black and completely opaque. It features a small, dense, dark mocha head with moderate retention. Due to its high viscosity and alcohol, thick legs are prominent on the glass.
Aroma.High intensity. Rich layers of dark chocolate, heavy espresso, and toasted pumpernickel. The Buffalo Trace barrel character is pronounced, contributing aromas of vanilla, spicy bourbon, and toasted oak. Moderate esters reminiscent of prune and black cherry.
Taste.Intense initial impact of Dutch cocoa, molasses, and singed sugar. The mid-palate reveals complex barrel-aged character, including toasted oak and tobacco. Firm bitterness balances the deep malt sweetness. The finish is long and warming with a refined, lingering roast character.
Mouthfeel.Very full-bodied and exceptionally viscous; a 'chewy' and velvety texture. Low carbonation. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present, providing a luxurious sensation without any harsh or solventy edges.
