Side Project’s Deca- is a monumental American Strong Ale that redefines the boundaries of barrel aging. This 17% ABV blend features threads of double Willett-aged barleywine and a quadruple bourbon barrel-aged base, resulting in an opulent profile of burnt sugar and decadent toffee. The addition of Port-barrel aged beer imparts deep notes of plum and raisin, while the O.W.K. component, quintuple-aged in Willett Family Estate Bourbon barrels, contributes intense charred oak and Ugandan Vanilla. The experience is viscous and luxuriously coating, balancing massive malt sweetness with layers of spirit-forward complexity and a lingering, warming finish.
Appearance.Deep mahogany to near-opaque dark brown; minimal tan head with very low retention due to high alcohol content and oils. Pronounced legs and high viscosity are evident upon swirling.
Aroma.High intensity; rich Ugandan Vanilla and toasted marshmallow mingle with Willett bourbon, charred oak, and dark chocolate. Secondary notes of oxidized Port, dried figs, and molasses provide extreme depth with a faint hint of tobacco.
Taste.Initial massive sweetness of caramel and dark fruit gives way to complex bourbon-soaked oak. Flavors of black cherry, raisin, and vanilla bean dominate the palate. Bitterness is low to moderate, serving only to balance the thick malt presence. The finish is exceptionally long and warming with a decadent spirit character.
Mouthfeel.Full and syrupy body with a luxurious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low. Significant alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, providing a soothing chest-glow without harshness or solvent notes.
