This massive Imperial Stout, a collaboration with Cycle Brewing, presents an opulent sensory profile driven by twenty months of Brandy barrel aging and a double-origin vanilla treatment. The Indonesian and Madagascar Vanilla beans impart a complex layer of creamy, floral, and woody sweetness that bridges the gap between the dark chocolate malt base and the spirited vinous notes of the cask. Fresh Cinnamon provides a focused, spicy counterpoint to the rich, decadent character. Expect a harmonious interplay of roasted espresso, burnt sugar, and dried dark fruits, concluding in a long, warming finish that highlights the integration of high alcohol and oak tannin.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. It pours with a thick, deep tan to dark brown head that shows low retention due to the significant alcohol concentration and oil content from the vanilla beans. High viscosity is evident as slow-moving legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, and charred grain. The adjuncts are forward, offering a fragrant mix of spicy Cinnamon and deep, sweet-pod Madagascar Vanilla. The Brandy barrel contributes secondary notes of toasted oak, burnt sugar, and vinous dark fruit esters like raisins and prunes.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely sweet and malty, followed by a complex wave of dark chocolate, cocoa, and molasses. The Indonesian Vanilla adds a slightly smoky, earthy depth, while the Cinnamon provides a pleasant heat that cuts through the viscosity. Hop bitterness is moderate but mostly perceived as a balance to the residual sugar. The finish is long and luxurious, with lingering notes of dark fruit, brandy-soaked wood, and a clean, spirit-like warmth.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the beer’s syrupy weight. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout but remains well-integrated without being harsh or solventy.
