This Imperial Stout, a collaboration between Short Throw and Slice, presents a luxurious sensory experience centered on a decadent, chocolate-forward malt base. The addition of Vermont maple syrup provides a rich, woody sweetness that intermingles with the soft, vanilla-like confectionery notes of marshmallows. Roasted whole coffee beans introduce a sharp, aromatic counterpoint, layering deep espresso notes over dark fruit esters of prune and raisin. At 12.8% ABV, a smooth, integrated alcohol warmth bolsters the viscous, chewy texture. This is an intensely flavored, complex stout where the assertive roasted character harmonizes with the syrupy sweetness, finishing with a lingering, bittersweet cocoa elegance.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a dense, dark tan to brown head with moderate retention and light lacing. Significant viscosity is visible as legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate and freshly roasted coffee. Prominent Vermont maple syrup adds a woody sweetness, complemented by vanilla-like marshmallow notes. Moderate esters of dark fruit like plum and raisin. Low earthy hop aroma with a noticeable, smooth alcohol presence.
Taste. Intense initial impression of dark chocolate and espresso roast. The Vermont maple syrup provides an earthy, lingering sweetness that balances high bitterness from roasted grains. Marshmallow additions contribute a creamy, confectionary flavor. The finish is long and bittersweet, showing complex layers of char, dark fruit, and residual sugar without being cloying.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a velvety, luscious, and chewy texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, well-integrated into the heavy body.
