Schloss Eggenberg Urbock 23º

Doppelbock 9.6 º
Schloss Eggenberg Urbock 23º is a monumental Doppelbock that earns its reputation as the "Cognac of beers" through a patient nine-month maturation period. This extended cellaring transforms its dark gold body into a symphony of rich, bready malt and intense Maillard complexity. Despite its formidable 9.6% strength, the profile remains exceptionally smooth, delivering deep notes of honeyed grain, light caramel, and dried apricot. The clean lager fermentation ensures the malt dominance is never cloying, while the alcohol provides a sophisticated, warming glow. It is a masterclass in balance, where the immense gravity is countered by a refined, elegant finish that honors the Bavarian Purity Law.
Appearance. Brilliant clarity with a deep gold to light amber hue (SRM 8–12). It supports a large, creamy, off-white head with excellent persistence and fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity of rich, toasty malt, reminiscent of fresh bread crusts and honey. Subtle notes of dried stone fruits like apricot and golden raisin emerge from the long maturation. Hop aroma is virtually absent, though a faint herbal whisper may be detected. A clean fermentation profile is accompanied by a sophisticated, spirit-like alcohol presence.
Taste. Dominant, rich maltiness takes center stage with flavors of toasted grain, honeyed biscuits, and a touch of caramel. Bitterness is moderately low, providing just enough structure to keep the immense malt profile from being cloying. Faint herbal hop notes are secondary to the clean lager character. The finish is remarkably smooth and warming, with a lingering, elegant malt sweetness and no harshness.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and velvety with a rich, creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate-low, enhancing the beer’s weight on the palate. A significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth provides a gentle, glowing sensation without any burning or fusel harshness.
