This classic Vienna Lager presents a deep copper hue and a sophisticated sensory profile defined by a decoction-style malt richness. A robust backbone of caramel and toffee notes from two-row barley provides a smooth, toasted foundation. The aromatic profile is elevated by the signature use of Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger Noble hops, contributing elegant floral, spicy, and subtle pine layers with a hint of citrus. The palate finds a masterful equilibrium between this sweet malt complexity and a firm, crisp bitterness, resulting in a clean, refreshing finish that exemplifies the balance of a refined amber lager.
Appearance. Deep amber to reddish-copper with brilliant clarity. Pours with a moderate, off-white head that demonstrates good retention and leaves light lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderately intense malt aroma featuring toasted bread and rich grain, with noticeable notes of caramel and light toffee. The hop character is moderate and refined, showing floral, spicy, and slightly piney notes from Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger. Clean fermentation profile with no sulfur or esters.
Taste. Initial malt sweetness leads with flavors of toasted crust, caramel, and a hint of biscuit. This richness is balanced by a firm hop bitterness. Hop flavors are floral and herbal with a slight citrus edge. The balance is slightly towards the malt, yet it finishes relatively dry and clean with a lingering toasted grain aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate-high, providing a crisp, refreshing sparkle. No perceptible alcohol warmth or astringency.

It is brewed using a decoration mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted. The Noble hops varieties, Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang Tettnanger, add a wide range of floral, piney and citrus notes, which are present from the aroma, through the flavor, to the lingering smooth finish. We take great pride in the Noble hops used in our beers. They are hand selected by Jim Koch and our other brewers from the world's oldest hops growing area. Among the world's most expensive, they cost twenty times as much as other hops.
