Taika is a modern expression of an American Pale Ale that highlights a vibrant blend of New Zealand hops. Bright lime and stone fruit notes from Motueka and Wai-iti lead the sensory profile, while Nelson Sauvin contributes its signature crushed gooseberry and white grape character. The addition of Moutere and Sticklebract introduces complex layers of resinous pine, fresh grass, and a distinctive drying citrus rind finish. Brewed with oats to create a soft, hazy appearance and a chewy, smooth texture, this beer balances intense tropical juiciness against a lean, grainy malt backbone for a refreshing and clean finish.
Appearance. Pale golden (5-7 SRM). Large, persistent white head with excellent retention and dense lacing. Hazy to opaque clarity with a soft, glowing character.
Aroma. High hop intensity featuring prominent tropical fruit (passion fruit, mango), citrus (lime, lemon zest), and white grape. Secondary notes of pine resin and fresh-cut grass. Low neutral grainy maltiness supports the hop-forward profile; clean fermentation with very low fruity esters.
Taste. Initial impression is hop-forward with tropical sweetness and bright lime. Hop flavors mirror the aroma, showcasing citrus peel and gooseberry. Moderate bitterness is well-integrated, providing a clean counterpoint to the soft malt. The finish is dry and crisp with a lingering pithy citrus rind and piney aftertaste. Malt remains supportive with a gentle bready character.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a notable creaminess and smooth, chewy texture from the oat addition. Moderate carbonation. Very low alcohol warmth. No astringency despite the resinous hop profile.
