This award-winning Dark Mild presents a deep ruby hue, characterized by a complex interplay of toasted malts and a distinctive, gentle smokiness. The slightly elevated strength of 4.4% ABV provides a more robust structure than standard session versions, supporting a rich profile of caramel, toffee, and subtle nutty notes. The brewer's intent for a velvet finish is realized through a smooth, medium-bodied texture that balances a delicate roasted character against a mild, earthy hop presence. It is a nuanced take on the classic British style, emphasizing a savory, dark sugar complexity while remaining exceptionally drinkable and balanced.

Appearance. Deep mahogany to ruby red (approximately 20–24 SRM). Displays a moderate, creamy off-white to tan head with fair retention and slight lacing. Brilliant clarity with distinct reddish highlights.

Aroma. Moderate intensity malt aroma featuring layers of caramel, toffee, and toasted grains. A subtle, clean smokiness provides depth, complemented by low fruity esters reminiscent of plum or raisin. Hop aroma is very low, offering only a faint earthy quality.

Taste. The initial impression is defined by sweet, toasted malt and rich caramel. Flavors of dark sugar and nuttiness transition into a light, well-integrated smokiness. Low bitterness provides just enough balance to offset the malt without overpowering it. The finish is smooth and lingering, characterized by a velvety malt aftertaste and minimal roast harshness.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a notable creaminess and a smooth, velvet texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, consistent with traditional British ales. Alcohol presence is very light and well-integrated, providing a subtle warmth.

RUDGATE BREWERY - Rudgate Brewery was established in 1992. The brewery is situated at the heart of Yorkshire in the Vale of York.
The original brewery was situated in the former ammunition building of RAF Marston Moor Airfield which was home to the Halifax bombers that helped defend our country during World War 2. The name comes from the old Roman road of `Rudgate’ which runs through the airfield. This road led the Vikings along our vale defeating the Romans in their steps. This road and its history is what instigated the main theme of Vikings for the brewery.
The brewery expanded into a modern new facility in 2010/11 on the same site. Rudgate Brewery is nationally recognised with several awards to its name including CAMRA Overall Champion Beer of Britain 2009.
