Root + Branch Brewing presents a decadent, ritualistic experience with Satanic Black Magic. This Imperial Stout pours like midnight, releasing an intense bouquet of freshly roasted coffee and earthy walnuts. The additions of raw cacao nibs and Madagascar vanilla create a layered profile reminiscent of flourless chocolate cake and espresso. The lactose provides a creamy, milk stout sweetness that perfectly rounds out the aggressive roasted malts. It is a viscous, chewy ale where the bittersweet character of the cacao and the woody depth of the walnuts linger, supported by a gentle, integrated warmth that underscores its complex, dessert-like intensity.
Appearance. Opaque jet black (40 SRM). Pours with a dense, persistent dark tan head that leaves significant lacing and visible legs on the glass due to high viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity aroma of dark roasted coffee and bittersweet raw cacao nibs. Deep Madagascar vanilla provides a floral sweetness, while walnuts add a distinct earthy, nutty dimension. Subtle esters of dried plums and raisins appear as the beer warms.
Taste. Rich initial impression of chocolate truffle and espresso. Significant malt sweetness is balanced by a firm hop bitterness and the acridity of roasted grain. Raw cacao nibs and coffee provide a bittersweet mid-palate, transitioning into a long, creamy finish of vanilla and toasted walnuts.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, gentle alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the 8% ABV without being sharp or solventy.
