This massive Imperial Stout, born from the base beer Yula, presents an opulent sensory journey defined by its complex barrel aging. Resting in Penderyn Whisky Barrels previously seasoned by Laphroaig, the beer exudes a nuanced interplay of coastal peat smoke and medicinal whispers against a backdrop of rich malt. Infusions of Vanilla and Cacao Nibs lend a luxurious, velvety depth, softening the robust roast. The aroma is a heady blend of dark chocolate and charred oak, while the palate reveals layers of espresso, fudge, and a lingering spirituous warmth. It is a harmonious, deeply decadent marriage of wood, spice, and smoke.
Appearance. Opaque jet black with deep mahogany highlights at the edges. Pours with a thick, persistent deep tan head that leaves dense lacing. High viscosity is evident by the prominent legs on the glass.
Aroma. Intense and multi-layered with primary notes of bittersweet chocolate and roasted espresso complemented by creamy Vanilla and earthy Cacao Nibs. The barrel influence adds significant complexity, offering Penderyn-derived dried fruit and malt whisky notes alongside a distinctive, subtle Laphroaig peat smoke and medicinal character. Low dark fruit esters of raisin and plum.
Taste. Initial impression of rich dark chocolate fudge and roasted malt. The middle palate introduces earthy Cacao Nibs and smoothing Vanilla. Hop bitterness is firm but balanced by the massive malt backbone. The finish is long and warming, showcasing charred oak, campfire smoke, and a touch of peaty whisky. Complex flavors of burnt grain and dark berries linger.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a chewy, luscious, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. Noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth provides a pleasant, glowing sensation without being sharp or hot.
