Made by Human is a decadent Dark English Barley Wine that exudes luxury from its 14-month slumber in bourbon barrels. This collaboration between Ritual Lab and Lervig presents a dense sensory tapestry of dark-fruit esters and deep, oxidized complexity. Rich layers of molasses, toffee, and singed caramel meld seamlessly with the barrel’s contribution of toasted oak, vanilla, and a distinct coconut-like sweetness. Expect a velvety, viscous experience where the intense malt backbone balances a soft, warming alcohol presence. Nuances of figs, raisins, and a touch of bourbon-soaked cherries emerge, leading to a lingering, spirituous finish that defines this sophisticated winter sipper.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown in color (30+ SRM) with brilliant ruby highlights when held to the light. It pours with a low, tan-colored head that shows poor retention due to high alcohol, often leaving oily legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity of rich, bready, and toasty malt combined with heavy notes of caramel and molasses. A prominent barrel character provides vanilla, toasted oak, and bourbon spirits, complemented by moderate dark fruit esters resembling raisins and dried figs. Low earthy hop aroma and a soft, vinous oxidation similar to old port.
Taste. Initial impression is a massive, multi-layered malty sweetness featuring toffee, biscuit, and dark fruit jam. The bourbon barrel aging adds complex layers of oak tannin, vanilla, and a light coconut note. Hop bitterness is moderate but mostly masked by the residual sugar and malt depth. The finish is moderately sweet and warming, with lingering aftertastes of sherry, dark cherry, and oak.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a viscous, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, providing a soft mouth-coating sensation. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present but remains well-integrated without being harsh or fusel.
