It successfully marries the drinkability and assertive hop presence of an American IPA with the visual and subtle flavor complexities of darker specialty malts.
Appearance. Deep ebony to black (35-40 SRM) and opaque, though clear when held to light at the edges. Topped with a persistent, moderate-sized light tan head that leaves consistent lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity hop aroma featuring distinct citrus notes of grapefruit and orange. In the background, very low to moderate malt scents of toasted bread and dark chocolate provide depth without dominating. Fermentation is clean with no significant esters.
Taste. Initial impression is a burst of citrus hop flavor, followed by a restrained, smooth roasted malt character suggesting cocoa and coffee. Bitterness is firm and medium-high but not harsh, well-integrated with the hop flavors. The finish is dry and crisp with a lingering citrus and light toast aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing a lively feel on the tongue. Very light alcohol warmth is appropriate for the strength.
