This British Brown Ale is a sensory recreation of traditional parkin, delivering a rich, mahogany-hued pour. The profile is dominated by the deep, bittersweet intensity of Black Treacle, offering layers of dark toffee, burnt sugar, and molasses. Fresh ginger provides a contrasting aromatic spice and a distinct, warming fire on the palate. Underlying these adjuncts is a sturdy malt base featuring toasted biscuit and nutty chocolate notes. The result is a comforting winter warmer that balances luscious sweetness with a clean, spicy finish, capturing the essence of the northern English sponge cake in liquid form.
Appearance. Dark reddish-brown to mahogany (18-22 SRM). Clear with a moderate, creamy light tan head that exhibits good retention and light lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. Strong notes of molasses and dark caramel from the treacle are complemented by a sharp, fresh spicy ginger punch. Subtle nutty and toffee malt scents form the base. Low earthy hop aroma and low fruity esters.
Taste. Initial impression of rich, sweet spice cake. Toasted bread, nutty malt, and heavy caramel flavors are layered with the bittersweet, complex tang of Black Treacle. Medium-low bitterness is offset by the spicy heat of ginger. The finish is medium-dry with a persistent ginger warmth and residual molasses character.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a slightly viscous texture. Moderate carbonation. A notable spicy warmth from the ginger complements a gentle, well-integrated alcohol glow. Smooth and free of astringency.
