This American Stout presents as a decadent dessert experience, grounding its complex adjuncts in a robust foundation of dark chocolate and roasted coffee. The aroma is dominated by jammy blueberries and the woody sweetness of maple syrup, complemented by a distinct toasted nuttiness from the pecans. On the palate, a lush malt sweetness carries flavors of bittersweet cocoa and dark berries before the maple provides a rich, lingering finish. At 8.4% ABV, it offers a smooth, warming sensation that enhances the velvety, full-bodied mouthfeel, while a moderate bitterness ensures the sweetness remains balanced rather than cloying.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (SRM 40+). It supports a dense, long-lasting head of deep tan foam that leaves thick lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Deeply roasted malt provides a backbone of dark chocolate and espresso. This is layered with prominent notes of jammy blueberry and the rich, woody sweetness of maple syrup. A secondary toasted nuttiness from the pecans is evident, with very low citrusy hop notes and clean fermentation esters.
Taste. The initial impression is of rich, dark malt sweetness and bittersweet chocolate. Mid-palate, the tartness of blueberries emerges, intertwined with a savory, toasted pecan character. The maple syrup adds a decadent depth without being overly sugary. It possesses a moderate bitterness that cuts through the richness, finishing with lingering notes of cocoa and dark fruit.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a creamy, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing enough lift to prevent heaviness. A noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its strength, without any harsh roast astringency.
