This Black IPA strikes a sophisticated balance between New World hop vibrancy and gentle roast. A complex hop bill featuring Citra, Rakau, Chinook, and Idaho 7 HyperBoost™ delivers an intense bouquet of citrus, pine, and mixed berries, bolstered by Galaxy hop flowers in the whirlpool. These bright notes dance over a supportive backbone of toasted malt and smooth chocolate. The experience is indulgent yet drinkable, marrying the dry-hopped intensity of an American IPA with the sleek, dark aesthetics of a porter, though without any harsh acridity or burnt edges. It is a harmonious marriage of light and shadow.
Appearance. Deep ebony to black (SRM 35-40); opaque in the glass but showing ruby highlights when held to light. Topped by a persistent, creamy tan head with fine lacing and moderate retention.
Aroma. High intensity. Upfront aromas of zesty citrus, ripe berries, and resinous pine from the Citra and Chinook hops. Beneath the hop layer, moderate notes of toasted bread and light milk chocolate emerge. Clean fermentation profile with a very subtle floral lift from the Galaxy additions.
Taste. Initial punch of grapefruit, stone fruit, and tropical melon from Rakau and Idaho 7, followed by a firm, resinous bitterness. The malt provides a smooth mid-palate featuring cocoa and toasted biscuit. The finish is dry and crisp, with a lingering interplay of piney hops and a touch of dark malt that avoids any burnt or ashy character.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation provides a clean lift. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, with zero astringency from the dark malts.
