Radical Way Brewing

Dethroned is an opulent Imperial Stout that captures the essence of a gourmet dessert. A heavy addition of flaked oats builds a massive, velvety structure to support its 10.2% ABV. The sensory profile is dominated by decadent layers of dark chocolate from cocoa nibs and the nutty, toasted warmth of hazelnut. Maple syrup provides a rich, woody sweetness that interlaces with aromatic vanilla, creating an intricate dessert-like character. While the roast remains present to provide a savory backbone, the focus is on a luscious, creamy harmony. It is a bold, indulgent beer designed for slow sipping and deep sensory exploration.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a thick, dense, dark tan to mocha-colored head that shows moderate retention. High viscosity is evident by the visible legs that form on the glass when swirled.

Aroma. High intensity with a complex bouquet of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and toasted hazelnut. Strong notes of maple syrup provide a woody, sugary depth, while vanilla adds a smooth, aromatic sweetness. Very low hop character; low esters of dark fruits like prunes or raisins are present behind the dominant pastry adjuncts.

Taste. Initial impression is richly sweet and chocolate-forward. Deep malt flavors of cocoa and espresso are bolstered by savory hazelnut and sweet maple syrup. Vanilla softens the roasted edges, while the flaked oats contribute to a grainy, thick mid-palate. Bitterness is moderate but perceived as low due to the high residual sweetness and adjunct presence. The finish is long and lingering with notes of chocolate syrup, toasted nuts, and a gentle alcohol warmth.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally viscous with a chewy, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but integrated. No astringency; the presence of oats provides a significant creamy coating on the palate.
