This California Common pours with an inviting rustic charm, balancing a grainy malt backbone with assertive hop character. Rich aromas of toasted bread and subtle caramel, derived from Pale ale malt and crystal malts, are intertwined with the hallmark woody and minty notes of Northern Brewer hops. On the palate, a firm bitterness cuts through the malt sweetness, leading to a crisp, clean finish typical of a warm-fermented lager. The yeast contributes a faint fruity ester profile, adding complexity to the resinous and herbal flavors, while the medium body and lively carbonation ensure a refreshing, well-structured drinking experience.
Appearance. Medium amber to light copper (approximately 10–14 SRM) with excellent clarity. It supports a persistent, creamy off-white head with good retention and moderate lacing.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring a distinct rustic hop profile of woody, resinous, and slightly minty notes. This is supported by a light to moderate malt character showcasing toasted bread, grainy sweetness, and a touch of caramel. Very low fruity esters are acceptable.
Taste. Initial impression is malty yet balanced by a pronounced hop bitterness. Toasty and caramel malt flavors provide a solid foundation for herbal and resinous hop notes. The fermentation is clean with only a hint of fruitiness. It concludes with a fairly dry, crisp finish and a lingering, firm bitterness and grainy malt aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, well-integrated texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a refreshing prickle on the tongue. Alcohol warmth is very light and well-integrated.
