Petrified presents a masterful showcase of New Zealand hop artistry, pouring a characteristically murky, pale gold. The aromatic profile is dominated by the coveted Nectaron hop, yielding intense layers of candied mango and nectarine, complemented by Motueka's bright tangerine accents. On the palate, Nelson Sauvin introduces sophisticated notes of crushed green grapes and white peach, layered over a tropical foundation of ripe pineapple. Despite its 8.3% ABV, this Double IPA maintains exceptional drinkability, balancing a soft, pillowy texture with a clean, supportive malt backbone that allows the vibrant South Island fruit character to remain the focal point from first sip to the crisp finish.
Appearance. 6-8 SRM; murky and opaque pale orange-gold with a dense, persistent off-white head that leaves thick lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity; dominant stone fruit (nectarine) and tropical fruit (mango) from Nectaron, citrusy tangerine from Motueka, and a distinctive vinous, gooseberry quality from Nelson Sauvin. Very low, neutral grainy malt in the background with a clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Immediate impression of ripe pineapple and white peach; mid-palate reveals crushed green grapes and lime zest. Moderate bitterness that is firm but smooth, lacking any harshness. Low, supportive crackery malt leads into a medium-dry finish with lingering tropical esters and hop resin.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a notable soft, creamy, and pillowy texture; moderate carbonation provides a gentle lift, accompanied by a restrained, smooth alcohol warmth.
