Propaganda Brewery Desolator
Desolator is a formidable Doppelbock that commands attention with its intense malt-forward profile. At 8.3% ABV, it presents a rich tapestry of Maillard-driven flavors, evoking deeply toasted crusts and hints of dark caramel typical of high-quality Munich and Vienna malts. The aroma is dominated by strong malt character, featuring layers of dark fruit like plums and raisins, while remaining free of hop interference. A clean lager fermentation ensures the focus stays on the decadent, bread-like sweetness. Despite its strength, the finish remains surprisingly smooth, offering a well-integrated alcohol warmth that complements the full-bodied experience without ever becoming harsh or cloying.
Appearance. Copper to dark brown in color (18-22 SRM) with brilliant clarity and attractive ruby highlights. It supports a large, creamy, and persistent off-white head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. Very strong malt intensity featuring deeply toasted bread and rich Maillard products. Subtle notes of dark fruit leather and plums are present, supported by a moderate, clean alcohol aroma. Hop aroma is absent.
Taste. Initial impression is very rich and malty-sweet, showcasing flavors of toasted bread and light chocolate without any roasted or burnt notes. Hop bitterness is moderate-low, serving only to support the malt dominance. The finish displays an impression of attenuation, drying out enough to prevent a cloying aftertaste. The fermentation is exceptionally clean.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate-low, providing a gentle prickle that gives way to a noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth. No astringency or harshness.
