Poperings Hommelbier is an aromatic Belgian Golden Strong Ale that serves as a tribute to the hop-growing region of Poperinge. It presents a hazy golden-amber hue beneath a dense, rocky white head. The sensory experience is defined by intense green herbal hops and fruity esters of pear and orange zest. On the palate, a refreshing spice profile featuring cumin and peppery phenols emerges, supported by a subtle honeyed malt character. The finish is remarkably dry and effervescent, showcasing a firm, lingering bitterness that emphasizes the beer’s name—Hommel—the local dialect for hops.
Appearance. Golden to amber-gold (5–7 SRM) with a slight, persistent haze. Crowned by a dense, rocky, and long-lasting white head that leaves characteristic Belgian lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity featuring prominent herbal and floral green hop notes. Esters of pear and citrus zest are balanced by peppery phenols and a distinct spicy hint of cumin over a clean, grainy pilsner malt base.
Taste. Initial flavors of orange and grapefruit citrus transition into a savory, spicy mid-palate reminiscent of cumin and black pepper. A light honeyed sweetness is quickly overtaken by a high level of attenuation. The finish is very dry with a firm, herbal hop bitterness that lingers cleanly into the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body that feels lighter than the 7.5% ABV suggests due to very high, effervescent carbonation. Smooth, well-integrated alcohol warmth provides a slight glow without being hot.
