Dark Engineering is a monumental Imperial Stout that showcases the collaborative mastery of Põhjala and Moersleutel. This viscous, jet-black ale flows with immense density, a characteristic enhanced by the addition of oatmeal for a luxurious texture. The sensory profile is dominated by a complex interplay of charred oak and spicy Finnish rye whisky extracted from extensive barrel aging. Fragrant vanilla beans weave through layers of bittersweet dark chocolate, roasted espresso, and black licorice. At 14% ABV, the alcohol provides a steady, well-integrated warmth that carries deep notes of dried figs and raisins into a long, decadent finish defined by spirituous complexity and roasted depth.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a dense, persistent deep tan head that leaves thick, oily legs on the glass, indicating high viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity. Bold layers of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and charred oak. The Finnish rye whisky barrels contribute distinct notes of spicy rye grain and sandalwood, harmonizing with rich, aromatic vanilla beans. Moderate esters of prune and black currant emerge as it warms, alongside a clean, spirituous alcohol presence.
Taste. Massive and decadent initial impression featuring burnt grain and bittersweet cocoa. The mid-palate reveals the spicy character of rye whisky and woody tannins, softened by creamy vanilla and a rich malt backbone. Firm bitterness balances the significant residual sweetness. The finish is exceptionally long and warming, with lingering notes of espresso, dark-roasted malt, and dried dark fruit.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, chewy, and velvety with a coating, luscious texture. Low to moderate carbonation. Significant alcohol warmth is present and noticeable but smooth, lacking any harsh solvent qualities.
