Why So Serious? is a complex American Stout that subverts expectations with a bold, smoky character. The base provides deep layers of dark chocolate and roasted coffee, while the addition of Lapsang Souchong tea introduces an aromatic pine-smoke and campfire essence. This is further elevated by Laphroaig peat-smoked salt, which contributes a distinct medicinal peatiness and a subtle briny earthiness that enhances the roasted malt sweetness. The result is a brooding, multilayered experience where aggressive roast meets the rugged, maritime qualities of Islay smoke, finishing with a lingering, savory complexity.
Appearance. Jet black (40 SRM) and opaque; features a large, persistent light tan head with fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity featuring strong roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate. This is layered with a pronounced pine-smoke from Lapsang Souchong and earthy, medicinal peat. Low resiny hop notes and a subtle saline mineral edge are present.
Taste. Initial impression of bitter roast followed by intense dark chocolate and espresso. Significant smoky flavors of wood-smoke and peat are integrated with a noticeable saltiness that brightens the malt. Medium bitterness and low resiny hop flavor lead to a dry, lingering finish with a savory sea-salt aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a somewhat creamy texture. Moderate-high carbonation provides a crisp edge, accompanied by light, smooth alcohol warmth and a touch of tea-derived tannin.
