Shadowroot is a sophisticated West Coast Black IPA that masterfully balances intense hopping with a restrained dark malt backbone. Leveraging a blend of Carafa Special II, Chocolate Rye, and Chocolate Wheat, the beer offers a deep onyx hue and subtle spicy undertones without harsh roasted astringency. The hop profile is exceptionally complex, featuring Citra, Motueka, Zula, and Książęcy, which deliver a vibrant medley of tropical fruit and citrus. Amora Preta adds an intriguing hint of coconut and herbal depth. The finish is decisively dry and resinous, highlighting the snappy bitterness characteristic of the West Coast style while maintaining a smooth, rye-enhanced creaminess.

Appearance. Deep ebony to black (SRM 35-40). Pours with a persistent, creamy light-tan head that leaves intricate lacing. Clear though nearly opaque.

Aroma. High hop intensity featuring prominent tropical fruit, lime zest, and grapefruit, underpinned by a unique coconut and herbal note. The malt profile is restrained, offering subtle dark chocolate, toasted rye, and a hint of spice without acrid smoke or burnt char.

Taste. Initial impression is hop-forward with mango, citrus, and resinous pine. The malt provides a smooth, supporting role of cocoa and toasted grain from the Chocolate Rye and Chocolate Wheat. Bitterness is firm and clean, consistent with the West Coast style. Finishes very dry and crisp with a lingering spicy, herbal aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-light to medium body with a distinct silkiness and light creaminess provided by the rye. Moderate carbonation. Subtle, well-integrated alcohol warmth. Very low astringency.

Voor de bitterheid hebben ze gehopt met Flex, en voor koken en whirlpool gebruikten ze o.a. Amora Preta, Citra Incognito, Zula en Książęcy. Citra Książęcy, Motueka en Zula werden koud. Effect? Tropische en citrustonen gecombineerd met een delicaat kokosnootaccent en subtiele kruidigheid.
