This Imperial Stout presents an opulent sensory journey, shaped by a twenty-month residency in Rittenhouse Rye, Buffalo Trace, and Willett Bourbon barrels. The nose is dominated by layers of toasted coconut, dark-roasted coffee, and fragrant vanilla, supported by the deep cocoa nibs and spicy oak. On the palate, a decadent malt base delivers rich flavors of bittersweet chocolate and espresso, while the spirit-forward character of the rye and bourbon barrels adds complexity with notes of caramel and spice. The texture is exceptionally thick and velvety, finishing with a lingering, smooth warmth that balances the intense sweetness and roasted bitterness of this massive stout.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). It pours with a dense, creamy, deep tan to dark brown head that shows moderate retention and leaves thick, oily legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity; a complex bouquet of freshly roasted coffee, rich dark chocolate, and toasted coconut. The extended barrel aging contributes clear notes of spicy rye grain, sweet vanilla bean, and charred oak. Secondary notes of dark fruit, such as prunes and black currants, emerge as the beer warms.
Taste. Massive and multi-layered; initial flavors of espresso and cocoa nibs transition into sweet coconut and vanilla. The mid-palate is defined by the three-barrel blend, offering nuances of caramel, spicy rye, and a hint of bourbon-soaked wood. Bitterness is moderate to firm but serves primarily to balance the rich residual sweetness. The finish is long and warming with a lingering bittersweet chocolate aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety, and mouth-coating texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its twenty months of maturation and high gravity.
