Affection is a decadent Imperial Stout that showcases a masterclass in barrel blending and adjunct integration. The 20-28 months of aging in Heaven Hill Bourbon, Barbados Rum, and Marsala barrels produce a profound foundation of charred oak, molasses, and vinous dark fruit. Sri Lanka coconut chips provide a luscious, toasted creaminess that bridges into the rich Madagascar and Uganda vanilla. Intense Brazil coffee notes and a blend of Hispaniola and Bolivia cocoa beans drive a deep, bittersweet complexity. The 12% ABV is expertly integrated, offering a velvety warmth that complements the chewy, viscous body for a luxurious, lingering finish.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40+ SRM). Crowned by a dense, mocha-colored head with moderate retention that leaves oily legs on the glass as the head recedes.
Aroma. High intensity featuring rich espresso from Brazil coffee and dark chocolate from Hispaniola and Bolivia cocoa. Toasted coconut is prominent, layered with Madagascar and Uganda vanilla beans. Deep Bourbon oak, caramel, and a distinct vinous, fortified wine note from Marsala and spicy Barbados Rum.
Taste. An initial impression of sweet vanilla and coconut transitions to roasted coffee and earthy cocoa. Heaven Hill barrels contribute caramel and charred oak, while the Marsala adds a raisin-like complexity and the Barbados Rum provides a dark sugar depth. Bitterness is moderate to firm, balancing the heavy residual sweetness. The finish is long and warming with lingering notes of dark fruit and roast.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Low to moderate carbonation. Significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present without being harsh. High creaminess from the adjunct additions.
