Philter Brewing Red presents a vibrant modern interpretation of an Irish Red Ale, balancing traditional malt depth with an aggressive hop profile. A foundation of light crystal malt provides subtle toffee and biscuit notes, which are quickly overtaken by bold, punchy aromas of passionfruit and melon driven by Galaxy and Mosaic hops. Citra adds a bright citrus layer, while Cascade contributes soft floral and berry nuances. Despite its aromatic intensity, the beer remains a sessionable ripper with a medium bitterness and a clean, dry finish characteristic of the style, making for a refreshing yet complex pint.

Appearance. Medium reddish-copper color with brilliant clarity. Topped by a persistent, off-white to light tan head with average retention.

Aroma. High aromatic intensity. Bold hop character featuring passionfruit, melon, and citrus, alongside distinct berry notes. Underlying malt aroma is low to moderate with a light caramel and toasted biscuit quality. Fermentation is clean.

Taste. Initial impression of soft crystal malt sweetness with flavors of toffee and toasted bread. This is balanced by a punchy hop profile of tropical fruit and citrus. Bitterness is medium, providing enough structure to balance the malt without becoming harsh. The finish is medium-dry with a very light touch of roasted grain dryness.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth and slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. Alcohol warmth is negligible, contributing to a high level of drinkability.

Based in Marrickville, Philter’s founders met when Stef moved in across the road from Mick. Philter was born during a conversation over one of the countless beers they’ve shared. The boys each bring a particular skillset to the brew. Mick is a specialist in the skate and surf rag trade, most recently as GM of O’Neil Australia. Stef is a beer lover and brand-expert, having worked for the past decade in beer, cider and spirits sales and marketing including stints at Lion and Beam Suntory. DID YOU KNOW?
