Phase Three's Minutiae (2024) is a masterful Imperial Stout, blending multiple recipes aged for up to forty months in choice bourbon barrels, including Elijah Craig and Willett casks. The sensory profile is dominated by a luxurious base of dark cocoa powder and rich vanilla, enhanced by the deep, bready character of Munich malt. This lengthy maturation reveals incredible depth, punctuated by a subtle, savory wisp of smoke from the inclusion of an imperial smoked stout component. It is a viscous, complex experience where the high alcohol provides a refined, integrated warmth, leading to a lingering, bittersweet finish of charred oak and dark fruit.

Appearance. SRM 40+; jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a thick, creamy, deep tan head that shows moderate retention. Distinct, viscous legs are visible on the glass, indicating high extract and alcohol content.

Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and prominent vanilla bean. The bourbon barrel influence is significant, contributing toasted oak, caramel, and a hint of spicy grain. A subtle, savory campfire smoke and leather quality emerges from the smoked malt, alongside low esters of dried figs and raisins. Alcohol is noticeable but smooth and vinous.

Taste. An intense initial impression of dark cocoa powder and roasted malts. The Munich malt provides a sturdy, bready backbone that supports heavy layers of bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, and molasses. Bitterness is moderate-high but well-balanced by a rich residual sweetness. The mid-palate introduces a faint, savory smokiness and earthy complexity, while the finish is long and warming, evolving from sweet chocolate to a drying, charred wood aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied; thick, chewy, and syrupy with a velvety, palate-coating texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present and well-integrated, lacking any sharp or solventy edges.
