Phase Three’s DDH Velvet Vortex is an expressive Double IPA that showcases an aggressive saturation of Nectaron and Motueka hops. The sensory experience is led by an explosion of tropical fruit aromatics, specifically ripe stone fruit and crushed pineapple, punctuated by the bright, zesty character of fresh limes. Despite its 7.7% ABV, the beer maintains high drinkability through a smooth, velvety texture. A base of neutral, doughy malts provides a soft canvas for the hop-forward profile, leading into a firm but refined bitterness that clears the palate. This modern interpretation balances intense hop oils with a clean, pillowy finish.
Appearance. Deep gold to light orange (7-9 SRM). Opaque, hazy appearance with a thick, frothy off-white head that demonstrates excellent retention and leaves significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aromatics featuring a heavy presence of tropical fruit, passionfruit, and stone fruit from the Nectaron hops, coupled with distinct notes of fresh limes and lemon zest from the Motueka. Malt is low and neutral, reminiscent of white bread or raw grain. Low fruity fermentation esters.
Taste. Bold hop flavors dominate the initial impression, delivering a concentrated punch of mango, peach, and citrus. The Motueka hops provide a sharp, lime-driven character that cuts through the soft malt sweetness. Bitterness is firm but lacks harshness, appearing well-integrated with the hop oils. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering citrus peel aftertaste and a clean, supportive malt backbone.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, velvety texture. Moderate carbonation. A soft, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present but not hot. No hop-derived astringency.
