This Strong Bitter presents a refined balance between classic British heritage and modern hop selection. The malt base provides a bready, biscuity foundation with subtle toffee notes. East Kent Goldings and Willamette contribute traditional layers of floral earthiness and herbal spice, while the addition of Harlequin introduces vibrant nuances of peach and passion fruit. A moderately firm bitterness anchors the palate, leading to a clean, medium-dry finish. Esters are present but restrained, allowing the trio of hops to shine through. It is an expressive and highly drinkable ale that honors tradition while embracing contemporary aromatic complexity.
Appearance. Copper-colored (approx. 14 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Pours with a moderate, off-white head that shows good retention and leaves light lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderately high intensity. A blend of earthy and floral hop character from East Kent Goldings and Willamette is complemented by Harlequin’s subtle stone fruit notes. The malt aroma is medium-high, displaying toasty, bready, and light caramel characteristics, supported by moderate fruity esters of pear and apple.
Taste. The initial impression is a balance of bready malt and firm hop bitterness. Medium-high hop flavors of herbs and flowers are layered with hints of tropical fruit. The malt profile provides a biscuity and lightly toasty backbone with a touch of caramel sweetness. Bitterness is noticeable but well-integrated, leading to a medium-dry, clean finish with a lingering earthy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Alcohol presence provides a very light, well-integrated warmth. The texture is smooth with no perceived astringency.
