This massive Imperial Stout presents an opulent sensory experience, shaped by nearly two years of maturation in 18 year Stagg Jr, Buffalo Trace Mash 1, and Heaven Hill Wheated barrels. The result is a profound depth of bittersweet chocolate and espresso, interwoven with rich vanilla bean, charred oak, and subtle coconut nuances derived from the extensive barrel contact. The addition of lactose softens the intense roasted character, creating a decadent, fudge-like sweetness. High alcohol integration provides a sophisticated warmth that complements notes of dark raisins and molasses, leading to a lingering, velvety finish that emphasizes the masterful marriage of malt and spirits.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a thick, dark tan head that shows moderate retention, leaving oily legs and a slow-moving viscosity on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex layering of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and burnt sugar. The barrel influence is prominent, offering aromas of bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, and caramel. Low to moderate esters of dried figs and raisins are present, alongside a clean, warming alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial impression is exceptionally rich and fudgy, followed by layers of baker's chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and molasses. The barrel aging contributes distinct flavors of premium bourbon, oak tannins, and vanilla. Bitterness is moderate, providing enough structure to balance the lactose sweetness and high residual malt sugars. The finish is long and warming with a lingering dark fruit and cocoa aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, thick, and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture enhanced by lactose. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is felt throughout, without being sharp or solventy.
