This opulent Baltic Porter flows with a profound intensity, immediately showcasing a dense layer of dark fruit driven by the addition of both tart and sweet cherry. The Pühaste craftsmanship elevates the classic profile, layering deep notes of licorice, molasses, and dark chocolate over a smooth, warming foundation. At 12% ABV, the alcohol is well-integrated but provides a noticeable vinous depth akin to a fine Port. The interplay between the natural cherry acidity and the rich Munich-style malt creates a luxurious complexity, leading into a lingering finish of roasted coffee and dark stone fruit that masks its deceptive strength.

Appearance. Opaque dark brown with deep garnet highlights; crowned by a thick, persistent tan-colored head with excellent lacing.

Aroma. High intensity featuring rich maltiness of molasses, dark chocolate, and licorice. A complex ester profile dominated by the added sweet cherry and tart cherry is complemented by hints of prune and raisin. Alcohol is present but smooth and vinous.

Taste. Initial malt sweetness gives way to complex layers of toffee, molasses, and a prominent yet smooth roasted coffee flavor. The cherry addition provides a bright fruit acidity that balances the deep malt. Hop bitterness is medium-low, serving only to prevent cloying. The finish is dryish and lingering with notes of dark fruit and mild roast.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally smooth with a well-aged alcohol warmth that is prominent but not harsh. Carbonation is moderate, contributing to a mouth-filling and creamy texture without being heavy.

Momentum Cherry Imperial Baltic Porter è la baltic porter robusta e originale prodotta dal birrificio estone Puhaste, una delle tre varianti della Momentum, seasonal beer del birrificio di Tartu. Dal tipico colore marrone che tende a tonalità più scure, questa Imperial Baltic Porter offre il peculiare bouquet torrefatto che si fonde con le note della ciliegia, aggiunta in ricetta. Le note del frutto si ritrovano nell’aroma, insieme alle note di cioccolato e torrefatto, con frutti di bosco e prugna percepibili. Il corpo è pieno, in bocca risulta morbida e vellutata, con una punta vagamente acidula. Birra sorprendente e di grande ricchezza, la Momentum Cherry Imperial Baltic Porter è un’esperienza che dovrebbe essere fatta almeno una volta nella vita.

Baltic Porter – spesso note come Imperial Porter – sono le ale scure di concezione tradizionale anglosassoni, ma di variante baltiche, cioè di quei paesi dell’Europa nord orientale che ne hanno fatto uno stile definito. Sono birre ricche e complesse, evoluzione più robusta delle ale inglesi. Sono a volte arricchite con altri ingredienti, per creare delle versioni alternative originali, come la Cherry Imperial Baltic Porter.

La Momentum Cherry Imperial Baltic Porter è una delle birre di Puhaste inclusa nella vasta linea delle Seasonal Beer. Puhaste Puhaste è uno dei birrifici estone più apprezzati in patria nato per mano del mastro birraio Eero Mander, il quale condivide un passato comune con molti dei suoi colleghi: Eero è infatti un appassionato homebrewer che sperimenta le sue prime creazioni casalinghe nel proprio laboratorio situato nel villaggio di Puhaste. Il successo e l’apprezzamento spinge Eero – galvanizzato dal riscontro del pubblico amico – a fare il grande passo, divenendo dapprima gipsy brewer, e in seguito birraio “resident”. Nel 2016 apri il birrificio Puhaste a Tartu, la seconda città estone dopo la capitale. In seguito viene inaugurata la tap room, autentico punto di ritrovo locale per gli appassioanti della buona birra artigianale. La produzione di Puhaste è molto varia, spaziando da stili più tradizionali – tra basse e alte fermentazioni – a delle linee dedicate molto pregiate, tra le quali spicca la gamma delle wild beer, la serie Silver (birre invecchiate in botte), le collaborazioni e le stagionali. Da poco è attiva anche una linea dedicata alle birre no alcol.
