Pühaste Brewery Distant Hum

This collaboration between Pühaste and Maltgarden delivers a colossal Imperial Stout of immense depth and luxury. At 13% ABV, it unfurls with an opulent display of dark-roasted malts, evoking bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and molasses. The addition of buckwheat honey infuses a unique, rustic complexity, imparting deep caramelized sugars, earthy undertones, and subtle notes of dark wildflower nectar. Undertones of black cherry, prune, and licorice weave through the rich tapestry, leading into a velvety, warming finish. It is a masterful, slow-sipping experience where intense roasty bitterness beautifully harmonizes with the robust, unctuous sweetness of dark honey.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM) with a thick, dense, dark brown head that exhibits moderate retention. Coating the glass with viscous, oily legs and persistent lacing upon swirling.
Aroma. Intense aroma dominated by bittersweet chocolate, heavily roasted coffee beans, and dark molasses. The buckwheat honey contributes a powerful, rustic, and earthy sweetness reminiscent of dark wildflower honey and caramelized sugars. Moderate esters of dried plums, raisins, and black currants support the malt. Hop aroma is very low, presenting a faint earthy character. Clean fermentation profile with a noticeable, well-integrated, smooth alcohol warmth.
Taste. Rich and intensely flavorful from the first sip, delivering massive notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and charred malt. The buckwheat honey brings an earthy, complex, almost muscovado-like sweetness that beautifully balances the aggressive roasted bitterness. Mid-palate reveals dark fruit flavors of prunes and black cherries. Low earthy hop flavor. The finish is long and bittersweet, lingering with dark chocolate, espresso roast, and a smooth, comforting alcohol warmth that avoids any harshness.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, chewy, and luscious with a velvety, coating texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A prominent, smooth, and velvety alcohol warmth is present, warming the chest without being hot or solventy. No astringency despite the heavy roast.
