Heimat Feelings is a bold reimagining of the Doppelbock, marrying traditional German malt complexity with provocative additions. A foundational richness of Munich and Vienna malts is layered with the campfire essence of beech and oak smoked malts. The inclusion of red beet juice introduces a unique earthy depth and a striking ruby hue, while refermentation adds a subtle character that balances the inherent malt sweetness. Aging on rum oak chips imparts nuanced notes of vanilla, toasted wood, and a ghost of spiced spirit. This full-bodied lager remains smooth and warming, delivering a sophisticated interplay of smoke, soil, and dark sugar.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark ruby-brown (22-25 SRM) with distinctive garnet highlights from the red beet juice. It pours with a large, creamy, light-tan head with excellent persistence and fine lacing. Clarity is good.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of rich, toasted malt and bread crust are intertwined with layers of campfire smoke from beechwood and oak. Earthy red beet provides a grounded base, complemented by dark fruit esters like plum or raisin, light vanilla, and a hint of dark rum. No hop aroma is present.
Taste. Very rich and deeply malty, with initial flavors of toasted bread and caramel. The smoke character is moderate and integrated, avoiding acridity. Earthy beet notes add complexity and a savory edge that cuts through the malt. Mid-palate reveals vanilla and woody tannins from the rum oak. Bitterness is low, serving only to support the malt. The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of dark fruit and toasted wood.
Mouthfeel. Full body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate-low, enhancing the creamy mouthfeel. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth provides a pleasant glow without harshness. No significant astringency.
