This Munich Dunkel, a collaboration between orca brau and Flügge, presents a sophisticated Bohemian take on the dark lager tradition. It opens with an inviting aroma of toasted bread crusts and delicate milk chocolate, driven by rich malt complexity. The palate is defined by deep, bready layers and hints of roasted nuts, balanced by a soft, restrained bitterness that ensures high drinkability. While robust in flavor, it maintains a clean, bottom-fermented profile with a medium-dry finish. A subtle presence of spicy hops provides a classic counterpoint to the velvet-smooth, medium-full body, resulting in a refined and comforting session-strength dark lager.
Appearance. Deep mahogany with garnet highlights (SRM 22-26); clear and brilliant. Topped with a dense, creamy, light tan head that shows good retention and leaves fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity of malt richness, characterized by toasted bread, hazelnut, and dark toffee. A low, clean note of milk chocolate is present. Hops are subtle, offering a faint spicy and floral character. Fermentation is clean with no esters.
Taste. Forward malt flavors of crusty brown bread and toasted grains. The sweetness is balanced, leaning toward a medium-dry, malty finish. Low to medium-low bitterness provides just enough support without lingering. No harsh roasted or burnt notes. Aftertaste is pleasantly bready.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, dextrinous texture that feels smooth and substantial. Moderate carbonation. No alcoholic warmth or astringency.
