This 2022 vintage Imperial Stout presents a massive, multi-layered sensory experience driven by a complex grist of ten different malts. Deep, saturated notes of espresso and bittersweet chocolate dominate the palate, supported by an aggressive, resinous punch of Columbus hops that provides a firm, lingering bitterness. The profile reveals subtle nuances of black licorice and dried plums as it warms. Bold and velvety, its intense roasty character is balanced by a smooth, integrated alcohol presence, leading into a dry, charred finish that showcases the classic American interpretation of this robust style.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM) with a dense, long-lasting deep tan head that leaves thick lacing on the glass. Visible viscosity with slow-moving legs.
Aroma. High intensity with dominant aromas of dark-roasted coffee and cocoa powder. Resinous and slightly herbal hop notes from the Columbus addition are prominent, intertwined with esters of prune and raisin. A faint, pleasant warmth of clean alcohol rounds out the bouquet.
Taste. Initial explosion of rich baker's chocolate and roasted grain. The Columbus hops provide a sharp, earthy bitterness (consistent with 60+ IBU) that cuts through the dense malt sweetness. Mid-palate reveals layers of caramel and toasted bread. The finish is long and roasty with a bittersweet, clean aftertaste and no harshness.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, thick, and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is moderate. A distinct but smooth alcohol warmth glows in the throat without being solventy.
