Orbit Beers BA Baltic Porter

This barrel-aged Baltic Porter presents a sophisticated evolution of the style, marrying deep roasted malt foundations with an assertive wild character. A rich base of dark chocolate and toasted hazelnuts is elevated by the addition of Brettanomyces, which introduces earthy, rustic notes and a complex, vinous sourness. Maturation in oak contributes layers of forest fruits, tobacco, and subtle wood tannins. Despite its high strength, the beer transitions from a velvety, malt-driven mid-palate to a remarkably dry, peppery finish. It maintains the smoothness typical of the style while offering an intricate, aged profile reminiscent of fine Port and dried fruits.
Appearance. Rich chestnut brown (approx. 25–30 SRM). Topped with a persistent, velvety tan head with fine lacing. Generally clear, though deeper mahogany hues may appear opaque in the glass.
Aroma. High intensity and deeply complex. Aromas of dark chocolate, toasted hazelnuts, and deep-roasted malts are prominent. These are layered with distinctive barrel-derived notes of oak, tobacco, and vinous forest fruits. A rustic, earthy Brettanomyces character provides a leather-like funk, complemented by dried fruit esters of plum and raisin. No hop aroma is present.
Taste. The initial impression is a complex, vinous sourness that gives way to rich malt flavors of dark chocolate and roasted grain. The mid-palate features layers of dried fruits and toasted nuts, while the barrel aging adds oaky depth and a hint of tobacco. A peppery spice emerges toward the end, leading to a lingering, dry finish. Despite the strength, the roasted notes remain smooth and avoid burnt bitterness, balanced by a medium-low bitterness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a velvety, smooth texture. Moderate to medium-high carbonation keeps the beer from feeling heavy or cloying. Noticeable alcohol warmth is well-integrated and deceptive. Subtle oak tannins provide a light, structured astringency that contributes to the dry finish.

Originally brewed in collaboration with Utopian Brewery in 2022, this Barrel-Aged Baltic Porter has spent three years maturing in oak barrels with three strains of Brettanomyces, developing into something truly unique.

Pouring a rich chestnut brown with a velvety texture, the beer has a complex sourness and a distinctive, vinous character.

Roasted malts from the original brew still linger on the palate, while the aroma offers toasted hazelnuts, dark chocolate, forest fruits, oak, and tobacco. You'll find layers of dried fruit, subtle spices, and a peppery finish, all wrapped in the earthy, rustic character of Brett. The result is a complex flavour profile with a dry finish that remains surprisingly light.
