This 2020 vintage of RUIG Raspberry presents a refined marriage of aged wild golden ales and vibrant fruit. The sensory journey begins with an immediate punch of fresh raspberries, underpinned by the complex, rustic funk of Brettanomyces—reminiscent of wet hay and aged leather. The 14-month barrel aging contributes subtle oak tannins and a whisper of vanilla that softens the sharp acidity. Deeply attenuated and crisp, this Brett Beer showcases a sophisticated balance between tart red berry brightness and earthy depth, finishing bone-dry with a lingering fruity pucker and a gentle warmth from its 7.1% strength.
Appearance. Radiant ruby-pink to deep amber-red; slightly hazy from fruit particulates and wild yeast. Low to moderate head retention with a pale pinkish foam that fades to a fine ring; moderate lacing.
Aroma. High intensity raspberry aroma, ranging from jammy to floral. Significant Brettanomyces character provides barnyard funk, horse blanket, and earthy notes. Subtle oak-derived vanilla and aged wood are present, alongside a faint vinous quality. No hop aroma.
Taste. Initial sharp raspberry tartness followed quickly by complex funky flavors of earthy hay and mild spice. The malt is a mere background of cracker-like grain, overshadowed by fruit and fermentation character. Bitterness is very low, allowing the fruit acidity to drive the balance. Finish is remarkably dry and clean with a lingering raspberry skin aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a crisp, effervescent mouthfeel from high carbonation. A light, pleasant astringency from the raspberry seeds and oak tannins is present. Noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth.
