Ophiussa Lotus is a super-saturated Double IPA that showcases the vibrant synergy between New Zealand hop varieties. The sensory profile is dominated by an intense aromatic charge of ripe stone fruit and pineapple from the Nectaron hops, seamlessly layered with the unique red fruit and candy-like notes of Superdelic. Despite its strength, the beer maintains the characteristic drinkability of the style, presenting a full-bodied and creamy texture that supports the heavy hop saturation. The malt provides a neutral, grainy backbone that allows the tropical and berry hop characters to remain front and center, leading into a firm bitterness and a clean, resinous finish.
Appearance. Pours a deep gold to light orange-copper with a slight haze. Topped by a moderate, persistent off-white head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent notes of peach, nectarine, and tropical pineapple, complemented by subtle red berry and citrus zest. A low, neutral grainy malt character sits in the background alongside a very clean fermentation profile and a hint of smooth alcohol.
Taste. An immediate explosion of tropical fruit and stone fruit flavors, followed by a mid-palate of berries and light resin. Malt flavor is low and supportive, offering a soft bready foundation. Bitterness is moderately high but smooth, avoiding harshness. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering, saturated hop presence and a clean aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, creamy texture that enhances the saturated hop feel. Carbonation is moderate. A light, pleasant alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, with no hop-derived astringency.
