One Drop Brewing Co's Madzilla is a striking Specialty IPA characterized by a brilliant crimson hue reminiscent of autumn foliage. Built upon a foundation of NZ Ale malts and a complex blend of five specialty grains, it offers a sturdy backbone of toasted bread and rich caramel. This malt depth is balanced by a sharp, assertive bitterness and the distinct aromatic profiles of Sequoia and Lórien hops, which contribute layers of resinous pine, tropical fruit, and delicate wildflower. Fermented with a hybrid lager-ale yeast, the profile remains exceptionally clean, allowing the interplay of hop-driven zest and malty sweetness to culminate in a crisp, lingering finish.
Appearance. Deep copper to reddish-brown (15–20 SRM) with a crimson tint. Clear to slightly hazy. Off-white to light tan head with moderate to high persistence and fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring resinous pine, tropical fruit, and berry notes from Sequoia hops, complemented by the floral and herbal-sweet hay character of Lórien hops. Malt presence is moderate, offering distinct caramel, toasted biscuit, and light dark-fruit esters.
Taste. Initial impression of caramel and toffee malt sweetness is quickly balanced by a firm, medium-high bitterness. Hop flavors of resin, grapefruit, and wildflower are prominent. Fermentation is very clean with a dry, crisp finish and a lingering, non-harsh bitter aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. Very light alcohol warmth that is well-integrated and appropriate for its 6.2% ABV.

Anyway, our next Red IPA has a base of fine NZ Ale malts plus the addition of five speciality grains. We’ve cranked the bitterness up a little, selected some damn fine new US hops - Sequoia & Lórien® - and fermented out with a hybrid lager-ale yeast. Expect a little malty-meets-bitter number that’s full of hop character and the crimson colour of Autumn turning. "Madzilla is not the enemy. He is the protector of the balance."
