This contemporary Double IPA showcases the experimental NZH-109 trial hops from the NZHops Bract Brewing Program. A plush foundation of New Zealand malted barley, oats, and rolled spelt provides a smooth, soft texture that elevates the hop profile without adding excessive sweetness. Expect an explosion of tropical and stone fruit character, with vivid layers of mango, passionfruit, and papaya. Succulent notes of fresh peaches and candied rockmelon emerge through the double dry-hopping, while a firm but integrated bitterness ensures a clean, dry finish. It is a modern expression of strength and drinkability, balancing high hop intensity with a sophisticated malt backbone.
Appearance. Pale gold to light orange (6-8 SRM) with a slight haze from oats and heavy dry-hopping. Features a moderate-sized, persistent, creamy white head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop-forward aroma dominated by tropical fruit notes of ripe mango, passionfruit, and papaya. Secondary layers of peach and sweet rockmelon are present. A low, clean, grainy-sweet malt background offers a hint of breadiness. Fermentation is clean with very low esters.
Taste. Initial impression is an intense burst of tropical fruit including papaya and mango, transitioning into stone fruit and a melon-like sweetness. Malt flavor is low to moderate, presenting as soft and doughy. Bitterness is firm and moderately high, providing balance without being harsh. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering fruity and resinous hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a notable silkiness and creaminess attributed to the oats and rolled spelt. Carbonation is moderate. A smooth, restrained alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, with no astringency.
