Fundamental Cake is a decadent Imperial Stout that pushes sensory boundaries through an intensive barrel-aging program and massive vanilla additions. The profile is dominated by an incredibly rich character of vanilla beans, evoking marshmallow and cake batter. This is underpinned by a robust blend of bourbon-soaked oak from extended aging in Heaven Hill, Willett, Woodford Reserve, and Jack Daniel's barrels. Expect deep layers of dark chocolate and espresso roast to balance the residual sweetness, while the 13.5% alcohol content provides a smooth, integrated warmth. It is a viscous, indulgent beer with a lingering finish of toasted coconut, charred wood, and dark fruit.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. It pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention, leaving oily legs on the glass indicative of its high viscosity and alcohol content.

Aroma. High intensity with a massive aromatic hit of vanilla, marshmallow, and crème brûlée. This is supported by rich oak-derived notes of caramel, toasted coconut, and spicy bourbon. Deep roasted malt provides a foundation of dark chocolate and charred grain, while low esters suggest dried figs and black currants.

Taste. The initial impression is intensely sweet and dessert-like, dominated by vanilla and chocolate fudge. The mid-palate reveals complex barrel character—toasted oak, vanilla, and bourbon—intertwined with roasted malt flavors of espresso and bitter cocoa. Bitterness is moderate but serves to balance the high residual sugar. The finish is long and warming with a lingering bittersweet chocolate and vanilla cake aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, thick, and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the creamy mouthfeel. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, lacking any sharp or solventy edges.
