Big Puppy is a vibrant Double IPA that serves as an aromatic tribute to the rare Riwaka hop. Created in collaboration with Trillium, this ale delivers a potent sensory experience defined by explosive notes of passion fruit and zesty pink grapefruit. The 8.6% alcohol is expertly integrated, providing a smooth backdrop for the hops to shine without overwhelming the palate. On the nose, intense tropical fruit layers intermingle with resinous pine and subtle citrus blossom. The flavor profile is dominated by the distinctive New Zealand hop character, supported by a lean malt base that ensures a crisp, dry finish and high drinkability.
Appearance. Deep gold to light orange in color with a slight haze. Topped by a moderate-sized, persistent off-white head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent passion fruit, grapefruit, and tropical melon. A low, clean, grainy malt presence sits in the background, complemented by very light fruity esters and a clean, smooth alcohol note.
Taste. Strong and complex hop flavors of passion fruit, citrus zest, and resin. The bitterness is high but remains smooth and lacking in harshness. A low, supportive bready malt character keeps the balance from tipping too far, leading into a dry, crisp finish with a lingering hoppy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, almost creamy texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a refreshing bite. Features a restrained, smooth alcohol warmth consistent with its strength, without any hop-derived astringency.
