Avgrund is a profound Imperial Stout that dives into the depths of dark malt complexity. Intensely rich, it features prominent cacao nibs that impart a velvety dark chocolate character, seamlessly merging with notes of rich roasted coffee. The inclusion of milk sugar provides a creamy, luscious counterpoint to the deep, roasted grain bitterness, creating a texture that is both soft and substantial. Aromas of dark dried fruits and espresso rise from the glass, while the high gravity contributes a gentle, integrated alcohol warmth. It balances a stormy, charred intensity with a gentle, sweet finish that lingers with bittersweet cocoa.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). It supports a thick, persistent dark tan head with excellent retention. High viscosity is evident through visible legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet chocolate, cacao nibs, and heavy-roasted coffee. Secondary notes of dark fruit such as raisins and plums emerge, alongside a sweet, creamy lactose character and a faint, clean alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely rich with dark chocolate and espresso flavors. Deep-roasted malts provide a firm bitterness that is balanced by a prominent milk sugar sweetness. The profile features notes of burnt grain and black currants, leading to a long, bittersweet finish that avoids being cloying.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety, and creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A smooth, well-integrated alcohol warmth is noticeable but lacks any harshness or solvent qualities.
