Oedipus Brewing Bepa
Oedipus Bepa presents a complex evolution of the American IPA, marrying the vibrant intensity of fresh hops with the sophisticated depth of maturation in red wine barrels. The aroma is a bold collision of tropical lychee and pungent resin, underscored by a distinctive rustic funk from indigenous yeast. On the palate, the vinous influence of the Contra Soarda barrels introduces a subtle complexity that complements the firm, resinous bitterness. This high-gravity ale balances its potent strength with a dry finish, leaving a lingering impression of piney hops and wild orchard fruit within a structured, malt-supported frame.
Appearance. Deep gold to light amber (8–12 SRM). Slight haze from the blending of aged and fresh components. Moderate, off-white head with good persistence and light lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring distinct lychee and resinous pine. A rustic, earthy character from indigenous yeast is present, layered over a clean, grainy malt base. Subtle vinous notes and a hint of oak-derived spice emerge from the red wine barrel aging.
Taste. Immediate hop-forward flavors of tropical fruit and lychee followed by a firm, resinous bitterness. The malt profile is light and grainy with a touch of toast. Rustic, wild yeast notes provide an earthy complexity. The finish is dry and lingering with a noticeable vinous character and a clean, warm alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly viscous texture. Medium-high carbonation. Noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth. A faint, pleasant wood tannin contributes to a structured mouthfeel without being astringent.

This is a collaboration with our friends at Vignaioli Contrà Soarda, an Italian winemaking family. After visiting them in 2019, we left with wine, yeast and barrels to create a series of beers that combine the best of both our worlds.
No grapes were harmed in the making of this beer: this is our IPA aged for a year in one of their red wine barrels. We then gave it a secondary fermentation with the indigenous yeast that grows naturally on the Vespaiola grapes.
